WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR THE UK TO AWAKEN TO HER PERIL?

I am disappointed with the recent by-election in Feltham & Heston.  The UKIP candidate, an articulate barrister who had run as a Tory before, finished a close fourth, just behind the LibDem hopeful but way behind the first place Labour winner:

Labourwon easily with an evidently clever management consultant called Seema Malhotra for a candidate. She went to school in the area and would have had to have been caught behind a bush with Ed Miliband – no, make that David Cameron – to have lost the seat.

UKIP tried to place a brave front on it:

There was only 88 votes between both parties.

UKIP scored 5.49% in the poll, an increase on the last General Election of more than 3% while the Lib Dem vote collapsed by nearly 8% to 5.87%.

The tiny gap between will worry Liberal Democrat leader and deputy prime minister Nick Clegg. His party has struggled to maintain a substantial poll rating since they formed a coalition government with the Conservatives last year.

But the Labour candidate got over 12,000 votes.  This is not a victory.  It is a crushing defeat.  It ought not happen.  The EU told the British Prime Minister to play along or else and forget about reasserting sovereign power.  To his credit, PM David Cameron vetoed the fiscal unification “treaty” and is facing intense pressure to play along:

On Monday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy blamed Cameron for the political rift. “There are clearly two Europes,” Sarkozy was quoted as telling Le Monde newspaper on Monday. “One that wants more solidarity among its members and more regulation. The other which is attached only to the logic of the single market.”

A victory for UKIP would have sent a clear message for Europe.  But only 1276 people voted for a sovereign UK.  Only 1276 voted for liberty.  I do not say give up BUT I must ask:  What will it take for the UK to wake up to her peril?
